Journey Into Mystery
Summer, in 1937, is a world of heart wrenching beauty. The colors are brighter and if shades more subtle than anything in the mortal world, but to behold Summer, one would think one’s vision was going. Summer is out of focus, the colors somewhat blurred, like a Van Gogh painting or a poster that fell in a puddle. Summer fey have hair and eyes the colors of gemstones and flowers and flames and sometimes of dreams. They always seem to be a touch cooler than people, like they generate no heat of their own and must draw on the warmth of the world to survive. Summer fey dress in gauzy, elegant cloth, often bedecked in flowers and feathers of every shade and color and wear jewelry of stones and shells, often with woven bits of greenery or animal sinews rather than metal.
Winter, on the other hand, is sharp but distorted, like one is looking at it through a magnifying glass. It is a place if crisp shadows and light that doesn’t bend around surfaces quite the way it should. Winter fey often have hair that ranges from sable black to snow white and various shades of silver, titanium, mercury, zinc, and tin in between. Winter fey are warm to the touch, burning with the strength to endure their icy home. Winter fey wear heavy furs, leathers, and heavy fabrics in crisp, ultra-modern styles, often wearing jewelry of ornately bent metals and finely cut gemstones.
Summer’s architecture echoes faded empires past, cool alabaster columns in the Egyptian style, elegant mosaics in the Persian way creating stone flowers and beasts that sway with every warm breeze on every wall. Greek style statues, or perhaps mortals encased in stone, keep watch over every gateway and pose in many of the Sidhe halls. Plants have crept through windows and cracks in the ancient walls, clinging to rafters and covering every surface with a film of green-gold pollen and brown flecks of bark.
Winter, on the other hand, looks like it should not be, yet. Curved towers made of stone and glass and wires stretch into the eternally dark sky, glowing with a surreal light. Ice gargoyles and frozen fountains serve as decoration, and precious metals curve around in severe sculptures and furniture.
The Wyldfae live in huts and tents made of skins and broken limbs. They walk the realms of Faerie between Summer and Winter, the contested lands where things are born and where they die. The Wyldlands are heavy with fruit and flowers, crawling with creatures more fatted and feral than any that prowl the fields and woods of the mortal world. Wyldfae are most likely to look human, albeit more untamed and uncivilized and heartbreakingly beautiful (like all fey). Their hair may be tinged with green, but usually it is bronze, copper, golden, and all the shades of brown the earth contains, but their eyes are the same green as new growth.
